This is an orthodox icon. I liked the look of St. Anthony the Great. It has a Byzantine medieval look. It is painted on wood, using a old traditional method used by the orthodox monks. The standard for painting icons is that they need to be painted in layers and to use silver and gold for the background, in the end everything must be covered in lacquer. The original icon is very old and I took the pattern (which has to be reproduced exactly as in the original) from a photo album with traditional Romanian icons. It was a very interesting experience to learn how to paint an icon using this method.
I hope that you will like it.
(Oh, and I hope that this will not offend your religious convictions, this does not have a religious message, it’s purely traditional and related with a painting technique).
I just did a unit in school on the schism of 1054 which included all the things you said about icons. you did an amazing job with this. Really, when I pulled the picture up, I thought that you had just taken something off the internet and posted it as your own (nothing is supposed to be implied by that by the way). Really, I tried doing an icon (we had to as part of our grade) and mine turned out horribly. they're not easy to make. nice job!
I'm glad that you like it, and I'm surprised to find out about your experience, trying to paint one. I'm glad that you knew about it. This practice, which has a long tradition in Romania is practically dieing, because it takes a lot of time and patience, and of course a real passion for this. There are a few monasteries in which some monks or nuns are keeping the old ways of doing it. I have a book on how to do this with lots of details and recipes for how to make the colors yourself. If you need more details, I can look in and help you if you want.
Have fun!
it's so wonderful that you havew such patience for this (I think my lack ofit ismostly why mine turned out so badly)
I know whatyou mean by afew monks and nuns still doing though; i went to the monestary ofsaint John's In collegeville minnesota as part of the unit for school, and they have beautiful examples of icons and illuminated manuscrpts there that they've done themselves! If you ever get a chance to go there, I would highly suggest it.
Sorry I didn't reply. I didn't spend much time on the internet lately. I drew the face according to a romanian icon album I bought once. It was the icon that made the most impression on me, so I had to paint it. "Anthony" was the first icon I panited and probably the last. I don't usualy paint icons, I just wanted so much to paint this one, so I did it. I am happy that you liked it. I had to work a lot on the face, and to use an extremely fine brush because the size of the icon isn't too large so the face would have to be painted carefuly. Thank you for the comment. I will enjoy looking at your gallery
Thank you. I am glad that you like it. You can feel free to use a print of it if you like and use it as an icon. I allready got the original blessed by a priest in a church. My mother has the icon now. It was a gift for her. Thank you again for the comment.
My admiration for this work of yours is great; it is not easy creating a byzantine-style icon, and yours is fantastic! Like "artangst" I thought you had reproduced an image off the internet.
Thank you, you are so nice. I stoped painting icons mostly because here only church people are allowed to paint icons that are considered to be original, and I had second thoughts about it... But your nice thoughts make me realise that i did god painting it even if it is only a replica. Thank you. I'll consider painting icons again..
